The United States Of Couscous

We’re ditching BBQ this 4th of july! 5 chefs, from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania, and Libya—bring their regional takes on couscous to one table. Live sets of Maghrebian music will soundtrack the evening, with all-day happy hour to keep the mood lifted. Fireworks will be popping off in the neighborhood throughout the evening. The game is on!

So I follow Sami on social and I like the simplicity of his recipes and his ever-present smile! Boustany is his first book and it’s an homage to Palestinian food and culture. "Boustany" translates from Arabic as "my garden," which reflects Sami's signature style colorful and simple vegetable- and grain-led dishes.

Curated by Alex Knowlton, Yacine Boulares, and Meera Dugal, the festival will bring us contemporary and traditional rhythms reimagined by artists like headliner Bab L’Bluz, a Franco-Moroccan psychedelic rock group. The night will kick off with an ensemble led by Yacine Boulares who will be joined by guests of NYC’s SWANA diaspora including Omar Offendum, Mona Miari, Felukah, Zafer Tawil, plus a DJ set by the Yalla! Party Project.

Halwa By Faten Gaddes

July 2-27th
Westbeth Gallery, West Village

Halwa is a powerful multimedia installation that revisits a work destroyed in Tunisia in 2012 following an act of violence motivated by religious extremism. 13 years later, Faten Gaddes a Tunisian artist, returns to this silenced piece through a new creation that weaves together sculpture, video performance, drawing, and archival fragments. There will be a conversation with the artist on Thur 17th at 7pm.

Arabic For Social Justice

Algarabía Language Co-op is offering new Arabic courses to those who are interested in learning Arabic with a focus on topics of social justice, cinema, media, and culture. . Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in the U.S. and the Arab world. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency.
